Martin's approach

Schema therapy is an emotion-focused therapy with an established evidence base for a number of conditions including trauma, personality disorders and chronic depression. As such, it may be particularly suitable for individuals for whom traditional CBT approaches have not resulted in sustained improvements.

Schema Therapy seeks to understand how an individual's current problems relate to core beliefs and early life experiences. Very often these links are unconscious. Understanding and healing these “emotional scars” from the past can be a powerful part of the therapeutic process. Click here to learn more about Schema Therapy.

While Martin is very passionate about Schema Therapy, he is also trained and well-versed in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy,  Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. All of these approaches have been scientifically proven and have something profound to offer in the right context.

Danielle Gessler

Clinical Psychologist

Danielle (she/her) is a Clinical Psychologist offering an integrative, developmentally informed approach to therapy. Her work is grounded in the understanding that we are shaped in relationship - especially in the earliest stages of life - and that these experiences continue to live on in how we feel, relate, and move through the world.

She brings a quiet, attentive presence to both psychological and embodied experience. This includes a gentle awareness of thoughts, emotions, and sensations, and how these may be held within the nervous system, often outside of conscious awareness.

Danielle’s approach is informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and incorporated with her training in systemic family therapy, attachment and developmental perspectives, psychodynamic thinking, and body-based approaches such as Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These are held lightly, in service of what is emerging in the moment and tailored to individual needs, rather than applied in a fixed or prescriptive way. At the centre of her work is a commitment to moving at a pace that feels safe, and to listening closely to what each person’s system is ready for. She understands that early experiences can remain held in the body, shaping patterns of protection, connection, and disconnection over time.

Danielle’s experience prior to entering private practice was within public health: both hospital, and community settings, involving working with children, young people, and families experiencing complex developmental trauma. This continues to inform her sensitivity to developmental and relational processes. She currently works with adults, offering a calm, collaborative space grounded in care and respect. Her work is guided by a belief in the inherent intelligence of the nervous system, and in the possibility of change when experiences are able to be met, felt, and gently processed. Danielle supports clients to come into a more connected relationship with themselves, to understand longstanding patterns, and to experience a greater sense of safety, integration, and ease.

Danielle developed her knowledge and experience in psychology at the University of Sydney in undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate psychological studies. Alongside this academic journey she has held positions in the Department of Academic Psychiatry at Royal North Shore Hospital, as well as research and casual teaching roles at the University of Sydney. She has been an active contributor and consumer of academic research and has published over 20 peer reviewed research papers in the fields of trauma, neuro-imaging and health literacy.

Danielle holds the below tertiary qualifications:

Master of Clinical Psychology from The University of Sydney

Master of Philosophy in Psychology from The University of Sydney

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology from The University of Sydney

Graduate Diploma in Psychology from The University of Sydney

Bachelor of Arts Liberal Studies from The University of Sydney
