Our psychological treatments

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is particularly suited to longstanding psychological difficulties and patterns that can be difficult to change.

It looks at the deeper beliefs and emotional patterns that develop through our experiences, particularly early in life, and how these can continue to influence the way we understand ourselves, relate to others and respond to situations.

Schema Therapy can be particularly useful for people who have experienced longstanding difficulties or who have not found sufficient improvement through more traditional approaches.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological treatment commonly used to help people process traumatic and distressing experiences.

EMDR can help reduce the emotional intensity associated with difficult memories and support the development of more adaptive ways of understanding and responding to what happened.

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)

Deep Brain Reorienting is a trauma-focused approach that works with deeply held responses associated with overwhelming or threatening experiences.

It can be useful when distress appears to be held at a level that is difficult to access through talking about the experience alone.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on the relationships between thoughts, emotions and behaviour. It can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression and difficulties with coping.

Other approaches

Depending on your circumstances and goals, therapy may also incorporate:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Mindfulness

  • Motivational Interviewing

  • Attachment and developmental perspectives

  • Systemic approaches

  • Psychodynamic perspectives

Our clinicians may also incorporate a mind-body perspective where relevant, particularly when psychological experiences are closely connected with bodily sensations, patterns of arousal or responses to trauma. This is integrated into broader psychological treatment rather than being a separate treatment modality.

Finding the right approach

There is no single psychological treatment that is right for everyone.

The approach we use will depend on what you are experiencing, your history, your goals and what feels appropriate for you. Sometimes this means using a structured treatment such as CBT. At other times, particularly where difficulties are longstanding or connected with trauma and early experiences, a deeper or more integrative approach may be appropriate.

Our aim is to understand the person rather than simply the diagnosis, and to provide treatment that is both clinically sound and personally meaningful.
